Xiaomi Mi Body Composition Scale 2: Honest Hands-On Review

Verdict

In summary, having the Xiaomi Mi Body Composition Scale 2 at home is a terrific idea, especially if you want to measure more than just your weight. For all it provides, it is a good bargain.

It is a smart device that comes with an app and it can measure your weight as well as your body fat, muscle mass percentage, BMI (Body Mass Index), the percentage of water in your body, your bone weight, and even your metabolic age.

It is steady and durable but you should not store it in areas with high levels of humidity. Additionally, we do not advise using this scale alone just to determine your weight.

Pros

  • Minimalistic and stylish
  • Slim, steady, and durable

Price

The Mi Body Composition Scale 2 is relatively new as it was released in 2020 while the earlier version was released in 2018.

Its price starts at about $25 and can cost more than $40 in some stores. It is so popular that it sells out FAST! It is one of the best options you can get your hands on, so, if you want to know why, keep reading through this review!

Design

The very first thing you notice as soon as you get it out of its box is the glass design and minimalistic approach.

It’s stylish and elegant yet simple, reminding me of Apple products. Its surface is 0.5cm thick, tempered glass which is very durable, and the base is a matte plastic.

It’s very slim compared to the previous model so it can easily fit under a cabinet. Before I first stepped on it, I was worried it would either slip on the tile floor or it would flip to the side but it is extremely steady and heavy, so trust me when I tell you, it won’t go anywhere!

It operates with 4 AAA batteries, but in my opinion, it should have a rechargeable battery and USB port considering it’s a $30-$40 smart scale.

Unless you use it at least once or twice a month, I suggest you take out the batteries before storing the scale as in about a year or so, they could destroy your scale.

There is also a “hidden” LED screen under the glass. The scale activates only if you apply some pressure to it, either by stepping on it or, in case you want to measure the weight of a small object, by simply applying some pressure to the scale with your hand or foot.

Performance – Accuracy

When it comes to performance, the Mi Body Composition Scale 2 has 4 relatively small and round feet on the bottom which slightly move around if you try that with your finger.

These feet measure the body weight so the scale always needs to be placed on a flat and hard surface in order to measure your weight correctly.

I tested it on a carpet and on the tile floor by measuring a 3kg dumbbell and I got 2 different measurements.

Once on the carpet, the screen indicated 2.20kg, and once on the tile floor, it said 3.10kg which is way more accurate. So, always keep that in mind.

Now, you are probably asking: “How is this smart scale able to measure things like body mass, bone weight, visceral fat, and more”?

Well, the short answer is by using what’s known as Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis(BIA). For more information, check this! It’s also important to mention that the scale does not have a heart rate sensor so you’ll have to use your smartphone for that.

To make things simpler, the scale has 4 stainless steel electrodes that send a small and harmless electric current to the body which measures its resistance to that specific amount of electricity and calculates your body mass.

This is primarily made possible by the fact that human muscles are better electrical conductors than fat since they contain a lot of water.

Remember to step on the electrodes when barefoot to obtain a more precise reading. You can still get a simple measurement of your weight while wearing socks but you won’t be able to get more advanced information like BMI score, fat percentage, etc.

It’s important to mention that the BIA results only offer approximate information and should not be used as medical advice. After all, it’s a budget-friendly scale so the sensors that it’s using are not of the highest quality when compared to a high-end $300 medical scale.

Phone Application

This wouldn’t really be a smart scale if you couldn’t use it with a smartphone app, right? Well, you can technically use it without ever downloading its app but that’s not really the best way to maximize its value.

The app you are using with the Mi Body Composition Scale 2 is called Zepp Life(previously known as MiFit). It’s a fairly easy-to-use app with everything you need on the home page and you can synchronize your results with Google Fit.

You connect to it through Bluetooth. I would like to have the option of Wi-Fi but I guess it’s not really a necessity.

It supports up to 16 different accounts which makes it ideal for big families or personal trainers. It also has hidden features that are not advertised at all and you will only find them in the app.

For instance, it can measure your balance capabilities and then compare the results with other people that use the app. Additionally, you can use the Weight Infant option to weigh your baby.

Warranty

The Mi Body Composition Scale 2 does not really come with a standard warranty. It mostly depends on the seller you will buy it from.

Other sellers give you a 6 Month Local Warranty while others offer even a year plus. We bought it from a local store with a 2 Year Local Warranty.

Who should purchase the Mi Body Composition Scale 2?

Buy if…

You want an entry-level scale that can offer you additional body measurements that a regular scale cannot.

Its function is very similar to that of a smartwatch with the exception that it covers different parts of your body. I would also recommend this scale to professionals who are on a budget.

Don’t buy if…

You need a scale to just measure your body weight and nothing else. You’ll be better off purchasing the Xiaomi Mi Scale 2 instead which costs half the price.
